Welcome to School of Chemical Engineering and Science at Swinburne Sarawak. Our school offers degree courses in chemical engineering and science at undergraduate [Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical) and Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology)] and postgraduate (MSc and PhD) levels recognized nationally and internationally. The school is committed to providing students with outstanding educational opportunities in theoretical development and technical application to further the advancement of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical) is a four-year course which is professionally accredited by Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC). Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) is a three-year course accredited by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT). In line with the implementation of common first year for all Engineering disciplines, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical) is also adopting a flexible study structure now. The common first year will not only enable student to develop fundamental skills and knowledge, but also expose students to various engineering disciplines. Besides, it provides flexibility and easier credit transfer for students between engineering disciplines in the faculty. Under the university student exchange program, students from both courses can experience different learning environment in Australian Campus.
Our undergraduate curriculum emphasizes collaborative and student-centred learning, hands-on and work integrated learning, as well as scientific and engineering design experiences. Students are required to conduct and complete final year research project in the courses which allow them to practice their technical and hands-on skills in real research project. Besides, students have to complete 12 weeks of industrial placement or internship program which enable students to utilize the knowledge and technical skills that they have acquired in the real work environment. For Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology), internship program is optional. Throughout the study period, our graduates also gain essential soft skills such as problem-solving skills, leadership skills, teamwork and communication skills needed for them to excel in their future careers.
Our staff come from a variety of academic, industrial and government backgrounds, contributing to academic excellence in the courses. They are well-experienced and qualified in both teaching and research, with over 85% of our staff are PhD holders. Staff are actively engaged in various research activities, particularly in nationally-strategic areas such as sustainable reaction engineering, renewable energy, waste treatment, biomass conversion, modelling of metabolic pathways, chemical product and process design, natural products and healthcare, food science, environmental biology, industrial microbiology, agricultural biotechnology, etc. The school provides an environment for collaborative research engaging industry partners, national and international collaborators. Our students have the educational and practical training opportunities, as well as the connections to industries and professional societies. We are committed to promoting innovative research, applying research for the benefit of society, providing technical solutions as well as work-ready graduates for a sustainable future.
We invite you to explore our website for more information about our faculty, staff and students, as well as to learn more about our research and educational activities. If you are interested in acquiring knowledge in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, our school is well positioned to provide excellent educational and learning experiences.
