Aikido is a sophisticated Japanese martial art which consists of entering and turning movements that redirect the momentum of an opponent’s attack, and a throw or joint lock that terminates the technique. This makes Aikido one of the few martial arts that do not solely rely on the strength of the practitioner but rather the technique of using the opponent’s strength against themselves. The founder Morihei Ueshiba’s goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury thus people of all ages and size could practice this art without risking a serious injury.

Kendo (剣道), meaning “Way of The Sword”, is a modern Japanese martial art that teaches practitioners about swordsmanship. In training, swords are replaced by bamboo sticks called Shinai. Trainers (Kendoka) are required to wear protection equipment to prevent injuries during sparring (keiko). It is originally developed as a safe form of sword training for Samurai. It is both physically and mentally challenging activity that combines martial arts practice and values in the form of a sport.

Swinburne Sarawak Volleyball Club was formed in 2009, after a group of Volleyball lovers came together as a team and paved the way. The founder, Clemson Lau with the help of a local Kuching coach called Peter, solidify the formation of Swinburne’s Volleyball Club. A few years later, players from the club represented Swinburne Sarawak in the Malaysian college games (Masiswa zon Sarawak 2012). The team came back with gold medals after overcoming overwhelming odds; this became the seed that fueled Swinburne Sarawak Volleyball Club for years to come.
The club today aims to promote the health benefits of Volleyball to all Swinburne students and also soft skills such as leadership, being a team player, dedication, hardwork and many more. We welcome all Swinburne students to join us in this endeavor to not just play a sport, but be assets and contributing members of society through the experience.
